Dry and Itchy Scalp??

DRY and ITCHY SCALP??

What can you do to prevent and help treat this problem?

There are those who know this situation all too well. I even know people who have suffered from extreme conditions resulting in hair loss. Well I can attest to the fact that biologically I have a very dry and itchy scalp. Through the years it was a very big and growing problem for me. I would wash my hair and the next day my scalp woud be flakey already!! It became embarassing to have flakes on my shoulders, and to always be scratching my head. EW! So, here are a TON of remedies, (the majority of them being remedies that can be found right in your kitchen), that I have tried along with hundreds of other women! There is hope! I pray that these remdies and this information is a help to you. Please comment back with follow up :)

Part 1: how do you clean your hair?

A few helpful tips: How do you wash your hair anyway?
  • Use your fingertips! Do NOT scrub your scalp with your fingernails. Don't scratch!
  • DO NOT work your hair into a vicious lather all over your head! Take it easy turbo!! :) This will result in extra dangling! You want to take it slow and wash very gently
  • Allow the water to do most of the work! Split your hair into several sections and allow the water to wash away any product buildup, dandruff flakes, plaque, etc. A good 5-10 minutes of water rinsing will make a huge difference.
  • If you are in a rush, frustrated or having a bad day, DO NOT wash your hair!! Wait until you have time to be patient and gentle with your locks
AVOID most shampoos!! There are many chemicals that are very damaging, drying and detrimental to our precious and fragile hair. If you see any of these ingredients, RUN!

Again, avoid these chemicals!
ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL,
 PEG: (abbreviation for polyethylene glycol),
 PROPYLENE GLYCOL (PG),
 SODIUM LAURYL SUFATE (SLS),
SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE (SLES),
 SEVERAL TYPES OF CHLORINE:
 DEA (diethanolamine),
MEA (momoethnanolamine),
TEA (triethanolamine),
 FD & C Color PIGMENTS,
FRAGRANCE,
 IMIDAZOLIDINYL UREA
and DMDM HYDANTOIN.

To condition or not? TO CONDITION!!

  • Deep conditioning is a MUST! Again, you want to avoid conditioners that do not have those bad listed ingredients
  • If your hair is NOT protein sensitive (which mine is so this doesn't work for me)- you can use mayonnaise! I know this works very well for some women!
Hair Scrub Recipe:

this works very well for me when I have a dry scalp!

Milk 1/4

Olive oil 1/4 cup

Sugar 1/2 cup

Conditioner

-Lightly scrub with your fingertips into your scalp. You want to slowly massage away a lot of the dry flakes.
-Once you have worked it in well, rinse thoroughly and follow up with your normal wash and condition regimen.

Part 2: how well do you moisturize your hair??

JUST SAY NO TO SCALP BUILDUP:

  • Petroleum based products are bad bad bad news!!

  • WATER IS YOUR FRIEND!! It is the BEST moisturizer you can use!!

  • OIL is your friend! Extra virgin olive oil, carrot oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, etc.

Hot Oil Treatment Recipe
Hot oil treatments are very important!! It does wonders on my hair!

1/4 cup of extra virgin olive oil

1 teaspoon of honey

1 tablespoon of lime

-Warm up the ingredients in the microwave for 15 seconds. Or until warm
-Massage into scalp
-Cover head with plastic shower cap, or plastic bag
-Sit under a head dryer or place a hot towel (heated with hot water) over head for 5-20 minutes
-Rinse thoroughly and follow up with wash and condition regimen

Part 3: what about your diet?

Ever heard the phrase, YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT?? Well ladies, its pretty true. So it is important to maintain a good and balanced diet. This includes:

  • Drinking 8 glasses or more of water every day

  • Stay away from soda, sugary drinks, etc. Instead lean on things with antioxidants. Green tea, super fruit tea, and things like this. Coffee can be harmful if it isn't in moderation. It is fine to have a cup of Joe but you need to be sure to flush it out with plenty of water

  • Slow down on the fast food and take out! If only you truly knew what you were doing to your body! Cook at home, find some new recipes!!

  • Fruits, veggies, salads, nuts, etc

  • Chicken and fish are the best choices for meat. Red meat is necessary in  your diet as well!! Yes it is NECESSARY. So make sure you have red meat at least once a week

  • When it comes to breads and carbs, try to stay away from bleached stuff. Lean towards wheat, whole grain, rye.. things of that sort.

  • Cute hair and cute figure!! haha :)
In conclusion...
These are all very important things that you need to do in order to take care of that dry and itchy scalp! It can be done!!  I am a living witness :) Happier than ever now that I have gotten this issue under control. Thank you Jesus

I'm signing off,

Kendra, Saving One Nappy Head a Day :)
