Celebrate your joy in life

Find creative ways to express yourself. A lot of times, depending on your life style - you may not have an outlet to talk or show how you feel about your style, culture... or just who you are. There are tons of ways to show what your feeling. Write a poem. Draw some art. Doodle. Paint. Write out a word collage (like the one above) with all the things you love or are proud off. Seek out like minded groups. Research and find out about classed in your area that talk and teach about what you love. For me - I love to sketch. But I want to take it to the next level. So for me, I plan to start taking an art class or two. Something to nurture that part of me. What ever it is that you like to do, or that gives you joy... make time to do it, talk about it or express it through art, performance, or other venues. It's what makes you... you. And what ever it is, deserves to be celebrated.

Clothing designers Ayaan & Idyl

The Fly Girl blog did a feature on Ayaan and Idyl - twins from Somali. What caught my eye was that not only are they beautiful, but that their Spring line is full of vibrant colors.

What? I got somethin to say...

I have received some news that I think I should tell you. I am moving to Fort Worth, Texas in August, because I-HAVE-A-FREAKING-JOB!

After a year and a half of interviews, four different living situations, a couple of turned down jobs, and MANY MANY tears- I will be the Community Involvement Liaison at Texas Christian University in the department of Community Involvement & Service Learning.

I had a few offers on the table, and after some reflection, I chose a great position at TCU. I am VERY excited about this position as it utilizes both my strengths and interests. I will be embarking on intentional poverty living as an Americorps VISTA. My monthly salary will be equal to that of the average Forth Worth resident living in poverty.

TCU will also pay a little of my housing, provide me with a meal plan, health coverage, an office, and access to the library and rec center. After my year of service I will get a little under 5,000 dollars to go towards my student loans.

This is really great b/c I have always wanted to experience living in poverty as part of my discipleship. I know that I have lived under the poverty line since 2005, however this time I will be working 40 hour weeks and getting GREAT experience for my resume.

With this experience and the work that I have been doing at the Waco Episcopal Student Center the past year, I will be able to be competitive in future employment pursuits.

If you have been thinking about me and encouraging me in this LONG process, words cannot express how thankful I am to you. I hope that you will follow along with me as I make this transition and start some new things.

New Removal Method! (Thanx Sweetyangel)

Last night, I removed my IR Loose Curly with Motions Oil Sheen and Conditioning spray. It easily melted off my head. No more acetone! I also sprayed the unit's lace perimeter with the oil sheen and all the adhesive goo came off. Adding to the list on the right. Tomorrow: the application of the virgin malaysian loose curly. I just gave it the faux scalp.

Preparing for the Rex Virgin Malaysian Loose Curly

Whenever I see fierce apps (like the ones in Celie's Hairline Throwdown on the BHM forum), I get obsessed with the bandage wrap/nylon knee-hi wigcap. I start scouring all the how to You Tube videos. I pull up my bookmarked threads. I just don't get how the talented ladies do it. Maybe I just have a really weird hairline. I can never find nylons that match my skin tone. Then I figure, I use the faux knot bleaching method more for how it makes the lace cap look like a scalp, since my knots are already bleached. I'm going to visit my family in STL next week, and it's hotter than hell there, and I don't want anything extra to contribute to the pending hot flashes that are already on deck. I've just convinced myself to spray the inside of my cap. All I needed was to talk (type) it out. Another crisis averted.

X-Pen

"Thanks for the new X-Pen, Grandma!"

(Mom says we need a bigger car to haul
all this "crap" around in.)

I've had such a lazy day today - I haven't done much else than lying on the sofa watching films, believe it or not. Though I had been working for six days straight (and will be working tomorrow again as well), so I suppose it wasn't too bad. Have any of you done anything more interesting this weekend?

Canine Strength and Endurance - Take 2

As promised, I toted along my camera to the canine strength and endurance class that I am enrolled in. Just to give a visual of the size of this freakin' hill!

Here it is from the top ... pretty, right?

A little deceiving though.

Here is the hill from the bottom. That is a big tall man and a teeny Sheltie at the top. Yes that little black speck is Sis, Romeo's new girlfriend (he's such a man-tramp).

We did much of the same as last week, with a few new things. Started with warm-ups for humans and dogs. Then on to some weight-pulling. Each dog was suited with a harness and a bag of rocks was attached to the back with a leash. 2lb for the small dogs, more for the big dogs. Romeo got a 2lb bag, which works out to roughly 13% of his body weight. Then we walked with them pulling the bags across the field, from the base of the hill to the road (which you can see in the first picture just before the trees), and back again. Then we removed the weights, and did some sprints on the flat, then sprints up the hill and down a couple of times. Ended with crawls under the pool noodles, and some cool-down stretches for humans and dogs.

I'm really enjoying this class. A lot of great people and sweet dogs. The class is made up of 2 Shelties, 2 Pugs (really nice ones, not fat, very lean and muscle-y, no bulgy eyes), a Border Collie, a Kelpie, and a Rat Terrier.

Le Coil - eye catching photos

Picture blog Le Coil, features some of the greatest photo's of beautiful African American women. The owner of this blog definitely has a great eye for a Fab photo.

Crisis Averted!!!

What a day! I went to Sally's and collected my tools. I found a great highlighting wand kit - looks like an oversized mascara wand. I also got some oil sheen spray, Tressemme hair spray, and more JR Natural Blonde (from Walgreens). I removed my Rex malaysian wavy, de-adhesived my hairline, washed my hair, slathered on some Megasilk Deep conditioner, soaked the just removed unit in an acetone/goo gone bath, and began to meticulously color the roots from Hades!

I mixed up my color (L'Oreal Excellence Creme #3 Natural Black/Darkest Brown) with 2.5 oz of Salon Care Volume 10 developer. I sprayed the inside of my unit with oil sheen (to insure that the new dye didn't get on the freshly bleached roots). I dipped and swabbed until I saw no more blonde patches. I rinsed it well and conditioned it, and let it air dry. I will seal the knots tomorrow. Crisis averted... FAB! The virgin malaysian loose curly album has been updated with the updated AFTER pictures. So the lesson learned is, if you bleach your knots, and the bleach bleeds onto the roots, it can be fixed. Don't be afraid to bleach them knots!

While I'm waiting to put the new custom on, I put the IR Loose Curly back on. Peep the Swiss Miss Heidi braids in the general album above.

"Whites Only"... WTF !?!

This weekend, while visiting a local park, my family and I were on a nice little stroll around a pond at Montclair Park. As we were walking my mom noticed something, and pulled me aside. On a fountain, someone wrote "Whites only - No Negro".

I was shocked! I felt like I was transported back in time to the 1960's, where "Whites Only" signs were every where. Could this be real. Could there really be an idiot out there, writing racial slurs, just filled with hate and completely uneducated. Like someone from back in the old days, when Martin Luther King had to March for our rights. Just a damn shame... After all this time, you think people would have better sense.

But, I have to say one thing - Montclair is a nice city. This one ignorant person, that wrote this, does not represent the city of Montclair. But damn, I guess every village has an idiot.

*Update! The park that I visited is located in Northern California. Montclair is a small town located within Oakland, California.
