Merci Mini.

I finally had to part with a piece of myself today, that I never thought would be so hard to part with...my Mini Cooper.  In preparation for moving to D.C., a much more expensive city, with fairly good transportation I just couldn't afford to keep it.  I have been tossing and turning for 3 of the past 5 nights wondering if I was doing the right thing.  I felt almost as if I was putting a baby up for adoption, or relinquishing a long time pet to the pound.  The twisting in my stomach was as if I was preparing to get married, or quit an important job.  It is odd how a little 4-wheeled machine can provide such independence and security, so much so that is keeps you up at night not wanting to let go.
While combating jet lag, and the swirling thoughts about my Mini, my days have become long. Tired, and heavy eyed, I now can only hope that Mini will enjoy his time with his new owner.  She is from Barcelona and although I feel so bad leaving Mini here in Cleveland to battle the long winters, Mini will be responsible for making her life better here.  He will make her happy.  Although, I wonder if he will ever get out.  I wish I could have sold him to her in Barcelona.  Or maybe to someone in Rome, Italy

where he could bump over the cobblestone streets everyday, and be parked jam-packed among many more of his kind.  Or even to someone in Switzerland where he could be donned with racing stripes and zoom through the long and curvy roads of the scenic Alps...

Goodbye Mini, you were a wonderful friend to me that got me through many hard times.  Whether it was sitting alone with me on a dark night in a grocery store parking lot...just so that I could be all by myself, or shuttling me and all my of cooking ingredients back and forth from kitchen to kitchen, or even just allowing me a bit of warmth and comfortable respite from my dreary, frigidly air-conditioned office on a hot Southern summer day.  Mini, merci, you were amazing.

"Reading" a Book

E loves his books. He has an amazing attention span when it comes to books. He will bring you a book then turn around and sit in your lap ready to be read a story. It is not uncommon for E to focus on reading books for a half hour at a time. Lately, E "reads" the books himself. He reads to himself and sometimes he will "read" the book to you as well. I got sneaky with the camera and caught him going through one of his favorite signing books. Unfortunately, many of the signs he is doing are on the opposite side from the camera, but I had to get what I could without him noticing.

Phone-hacking Scandal, Key to Rupert Murdoch's Politics and Media Influences

Rupert Murdoch is a political kingmaker in Britain and his native Australia. In the United States, he's best known for promoting conservative opinion through media properties like the Fox News Channel. And in China, he's primarily a businessman working to give his News Corp. empire a toehold in that country's tightly controlled media market.

The phone hacking scandal roiling Britain has cast a fresh light on the billionaire media mogul's influence around the globe.

His outsize political role in Britain will almost certainly be reduced amid evidence his papers illegally hacked the phones of people ranging from a murdered teenager to former Prime Minister Gordon Brown. It's less clear what will happen in Australia. Murdoch's political engagement in the U.S. and elsewhere is less intimate and may not be as compromised by the burgeoning controversy.

"His newspapers in England are far more directly involved in politics than anything he owns in the U.S,'' said Michael Wolff, editorial director of Adweek magazine and author of a Murdoch biography, "The Man Who Owns the News.'' "He's significantly more influential in the political life of that country.''

Two-headed Snake Ukraine Zoo's Latest Big Attraction

A two-headed Albino California Kingsnake, each react and eat separately has become a popular attraction at Skazka (or Fairy Tale) Zoo in Ukraine.

"Sometimes one head wants to crawl in one direction and the other head in another direction," zoo director Oleg Zubkov said.

Zoo officials say the snake sometimes even steal food from each other. Because of that, zoo workers have to put a barrier between the heads when feeding the snake.

"If it is really hungry, its heads may steal food from each other," Zubkov said, adding he also needs to separate the heads with a barrier.

"The second head may get angry, but both then feel satiation because they only have one stomach."

The zoo said the three-year-old, two-foot-long (60 centimeter) reptile are extremely rare, appearing once in every 50 years.

Visitor numbers had nearly doubled since it went on display in early July, said zoo keeper Yakovenko.

The snake will be on display at the zoo until Mid-September.

Kiefer Ravena Leads Ateneo Blue Eagle's Victory vs DLSU Green Archers

After his scoreless debut at University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) (read article HERE), Kiefer Ravena - the 5-foot-11 former two-time finals Most Valuable Player in the juniors division and a former national youth team member, proves he is really Philippine basketball's future star when he played like a seasoned-veteran, firing away 22 points in the first half to help his team take an 11-point halftime lead, 41-30, that guarantees Ateneo's victory against De La Salle University, 81-72, in the 74th UAAP men's basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.

"I was pumped up. I'm very thankful because my teammates were looking for me and good thing my shots were falling." Ravena said about his first six points.

Ravena's performance, undoubtedly, is one of the best ever by a rookie in the most anticipated game of the season - 24 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and five steals in 33 minutes of action - the highest since Dylan Ababou scored 23 against National University on July 16, 2009.

"Kiefer performed very well especially in the first half. He gave us a big lift. He pretty much carried us offensively in the first half which gave us a little bit of a cushion for the second half." said Ateneo Blue Eagle's coach Norman Black.

Ang natutunan ko kapag marami kang baggage sa puso mo at ikaw mismo ang nagdadala non, makikita sa aura ng tao. So ngayon ako natutunan ko na isumbong lahat sa Kanya. First Look: “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” Trailer

Take your first look at the latest trailer of Warner Bros.' upcoming action-adventure “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” the follow-up to the smash hit “Sherlock Holmes.”

The trailer is now playing in local cinemas as an added attraction to “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2”.

The sequel reunites director Guy Ritchie, stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, and producers Joel Silver, Lionel Wigram, Susan Downey and Dan Lin.

In the film, Sherlock Holmes has always been the smartest man in the room…until now. There is a new criminal mastermind at large - Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris) - and not only is he Holmes’ intellectual equal, but his capacity for evil, coupled with a complete lack of conscience, may actually give him an advantage over the renowned detective.

Jared Harris (TV’s “Mad Men,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”) joins the cast as the notorious Professor Moriarty. Also joining the cast, in her first English-speaking role, is Swedish actress Noomi Rapace, who gained international attention in the Swedish film “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” Stephen Fry (“Alice in Wonderland,” “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”) plays Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock’s older brother.

Opening across the Philippines in January 2012, “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

EuroMillions Jackpot Winner Claims £161M Prize

Colin Weir and his wife Chris Weir - the EuroMillions ticket-holder from Britain who won Europe's biggest-ever jackpot of £161 million (US$258.4 million) - has finally claimed their prize, UK National Lottery operator Camelot has confirmed.

The jackpot numbers were 17, 19, 38, 42 and 45, and the Lucky Stars were 9 and 10.

It has not been disclosed where the ticket was bought or whether it was purchased online.

According to The Sunday Times Rich List 2011, Weir immediately became the 430th richest person in the country, ahead of Beatles legend Ringo Starr (£150m), but still just short of the Beckhams' league (£165m).

The exact amount claimed by the Weir's is £161,653,000 (US$261,188,571) while two other UK-based lottery players scooped £1.7m after matching five numbers and one Lucky Star.

Meanwhile, a man who won £26.1m in a family syndicate in January 2010, has urged the Euromillions winner to stay anonymous.

George Sturt, 77, who split the money four ways with his three children, said he had had hundreds of begging letters since he went public and regrets doing so now.

He told Sky News Online: "I've had so many begging letters. It was upsetting. One man even sent his bank account number for me to put money into.

Caligula Statue Unveiled in Rome, Italy

Officials on Tuesday unveiled a massive statue believed to be that of Roman emperor Caligula sitting on a throne and said it came from an illegal dig south of Rome that may have been the site of one of his palaces.

The statue, which had been broken in several large pieces and a head, was first found last January when Finance Police stopped it from being smuggled out of the country by boat at a port near Rome.

The operation led to the arrest of two so-called "tomb raiders" -- those who dig up the countryside looking for archaeological treasures to sell on the black market.

But more importantly, the arrests led police to the site near Lake Nemi, just south of Rome, where Caligula was believed to have had one of his imperial residences.

The statue, now cleaned of the earth that had covered it for 2,000 years, shows parts of a robed man sitting on an elaborate throne like the Greek god Zeus.

Significantly, it shows a man wearing a "caliga," shoes worn by Roman legionaries and from where the emperor got the name by which he is known. His real name was Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus.

Caligula, who reigned from 37 to 41 A.D., has gone down in history as a crazed and power-hungry sex maniac who demanded that his horse, Incitatus, be made a consul.

GMA Network Dominates Nationwide TV Ratings; Earned P532-M vs ABS-CBN's P302-M

For the first quarter of 2011, GMA-7 netted P534 million. ABS-CBN’s ordinary businesses, meanwhile, delivered only P302 million.

Fresh from its strong nationwide ratings performance in the first semester of the year, broadcast industry leader GMA Network, Inc. (GMA-7) further expanded its nationwide lead over its closest competitor ABS-CBN this month.

According to Nielsen TV Audience Measurement, the most widely trusted industry ratings service provider, GMA-7 posted a vital margin of 3.1 share points over ABS-CBN this July 1 to 7 (July 3 to 7 based on overnight data).

During this period, GMA-7 garnered 34.5 points while ABS-CBN received 31.4 points.

For the first six months of the year, GMA was the number one channel in the whole Philippines with 33.1 household share points, a point higher than ABS-CBN's 32.1.

GMA-7's lead was attributed to its programming lineup airing across all time blocks, especially on weekday afternoons.

For the covered period, GMA-7 scored a 5.3-percent margin in channel ratings for the block running from noon to 6:00 p.m.

Television’s longest running weekday noontime variety program "Eat Bulaga" continues its overwhelming lead over Kapamilya’s "Happy Yihee Yehey" (HYY), which only managed less than half of its channel ratings performance.

"Eat Bulaga," which ranked 9th in the list of top 10 programs in National Urban Philippines, garnered 22 household rating points against HYY’s 9.8 points.

GMA Entertainment TV’s "Dramarama sa Hapon" — composed of programs "Blusang Itim," "Sinner or Saint," and "Sisid," and hit Koreanovela "Playful Kiss" — has become part of the Filipinos’ afternoon viewing habit.

In Urban Luzon and Mega Manila, which comprise 77% and 58% of total television households nationwide, GMA-7 almost swept the lists of overall top 10 programs with nine entries in respective areas.

GMA-7’s big budgeted epicserye "Amaya" starred by primetime queen Marian Rivera led the lists of most watched programs in both areas.

The other GMA-7 programs that made it to the lists include "Munting Heredera," "Eat Bulaga," "Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho," "Captain Barbell," "24 Oras," "Spooky Nights Presents Nuno sa Feng Shui," "Kap’s Amazing Stories" and "Pepito Manaloto."

GMA-7’s flagship newscast "24 Oras" was notably the only newscast in the top 10 programs for both areas.

For the month of June, "24 Oras" garnered 23.1 household rating points in Urban Luzon beating "TV Patrol's" 20.9 by 2.2 points.

In Mega Manila, the gap was even bigger at 3.1 points with 23.8 versus 20.7 in favor of the Mike Enriquez and Mel Tiangco- anchored "24 Oras" news program.

For partial July, eight GMA-7 entries made it to the list of top 15 programs in National Urban Philippines; and 10 GMA-7 entries in the list of top 15 programs in Urban Luzon.

Both lists were dominated by Kapuso primetime programs, which posted a 6.2-point lead over counterpart Kapamilya programs in Luzon with 36.5 household shares versus ABS-CBN's 30.3; and a 7.9-point margin with 37.3 household shares for GMA-7 as against 29.4 for ABS-CBN in Mega Manila.

The Nielsen TV Audience Measurement used by GMA-7 is used by 21 companies including two other local networks, namely, TV5 and Solar Entertainment; Faulkner Media; CBN Asia; 13 advertising agencies and three regional clients.

On the other hand, ABS-CBN is the only local major TV network reportedly subscribing to Kantar Media, formerly known as TNS.

In Mega Manila alone, the Nielsen TV Audience Measurement has a sample size of 880 homes as compared to Kantar Media's 770 homes. Nationwide, Nielsen has a total sample size of 2,005 homes compared to the lower sample size of 1,370 utilized by Kantar Media.

Asteroid Vesta Secrets to Uncover by NASA

The asteroid Vesta may be the brightest asteroid in the solar system, but it remains shrouded in mystery.

When NASA's Dawn probe enters into orbit around Vesta on July 15 — the first spacecraft to visit the 330-mile-wide (530-kilometer) protoplanet — it promises to shed light on the many enigmas of the second-largest body in the asteroid belt.

NASA launched the $466 million Dawn mission in 2007, with Vesta as the first (but not last) stop. The Dawn probe is also expected to visit Ceres, the largest asteroid in the solar system, but only after unlocking the secrets of Vesta. Here's a look at the main questions astronomers hope the probe will help solve:

Why is Vesta so bright?

Vesta is the brightest asteroid, with a surface about three times as bright as Earth's moon, "and why it is so bright is the No. 1 mystery of Vesta," planetary scientist Christopher Russell, principal investigator for NASA's Dawn spacecraft, told SPACE.com.

When one looks at the most reflective celestial bodies in our solar system, Venus is the most reflective planet because of its clouds, and the sixth-largest Saturn moon Enceladus is the most reflective body overall because of its snow, "but Vesta doesn't have an atmosphere or snow," Russell noted. "Hopefully when Dawn inspects Vesta's surface, we'll get an answer."

Does Vesta have a magnetic field?

One potential explanation for Vesta's brightness is that it possesses a strong magnetic field. This could help shield it from electrically charged particles driven by the solar wind that would normally darken the asteroid over time, Russell said.

Unfortunately, Dawn does not have a magnetometer to probe Vesta for magnetic fields. Still, Russell does not think Vesta has a strong magnetic field, and suspects there is another reason why the asteroid is so reflective and bright.

"Personally, I think the answer is that Vesta has a lot of white crystals or other material on its surface," he said.

Where are other asteroids resembling Vesta?

There seem to be very few asteroids that resemble Vesta, but there should be far more.

The outermost layers of Vesta are made up mostly of basaltic rock — the same type found in much of the Earth's crust. There are asteroids called "vestoids" that, judging by their orbits, researchers suspect were once part of Vesta before they got blasted off by a cosmic impact. A few other basaltic asteroids have been discovered relatively recently as well, such as one named Magnya in the outer part of the main asteroid belt.

Still, theories of asteroid formation have suggested that more than half of all asteroids should be made largely of either basalt or another common mineral on Earth, olivine, and approximately 99 percent of these predicted asteroids are missing.

"There may have been other asteroids like Vesta that met a bad fate," Russell said. "It could be that Vesta was born when Jupiter hadn't formed yet, when forming bodies like Vesta was relatively easy."

Many of these Vesta-like asteroids might later have disappeared when Saturn and Jupiter shifted their orbits, with the gravitational pulls of these giant planets pulverizing Vesta's siblings against each other or slinging them at Earth and the rest of the inner solar system. Vesta may have simply been lucky to be very nearly the sole survivor.

What is the dark spot near Vesta's equator?

A series of photos recently captured by Dawn revealed a strange dark spot on Vestaabout 60 miles (97 km) wide near the asteroid's equator, moving from left to right across the field of view as the asteroid rotated.

Researchers suspect this blotch might be a crater.

"We'd like craters on Vesta for a variety of reasons," Russell said. "The number, size and distribution of craters on Vesta would give us some idea of how old the surface is, as impacts need time to accumulate. Craters also serve as digging tools, revealing what's beneath Vesta's surface."

"We'll know very soon now," he added.

Noodle Cat Creeps Out of the Bag

I was lucky enough to be called in to sample the incredibly awaited fare at Noodle Cat, in downtown Cleveland, on their coveted Friends and Family pre-opening night.  Noodle Cat, for those of you out of the loop, is the incredible Japanese noodle house created by the famous Chef Sawyer of Greenhouse Tavern, which is slated to open, this coming Tuesday July 19th.  Noodle Cat's plan is simple, fresh and delicious Japanese influenced noodle dishes (and maybe a few other dishes too).
The noodles are super fresh and made in house.  The flavors are clean, salty, and perfect for slurping.  We started with the bright cucumber miso appetizer,

which featured fresh local crispy cucumbers with three types of miso (including a spicy miso).  We also had the amazing chicken wings,

which I have raved about before, and the pickled plate.  For dinner, we all ordered one each of the entrees.  I managed to finish off the udon with silken tofu and mushrooms in a seaweed broth,

while also tasting the shredded pork ramen, the pork belly ramen, and the soba noodles.

All were excellent.  If Chef Sawyer runs Noodle Cat anything like he does Greenhouse, it is sure to be a humongous success.  If you love Japanese, get in line on Tuesday.  I'll see you there.

Severus Snape is the Greatest "Harry Potter" Character Says MTV Poll

Professor Severus Snape, the mysterious potions master at Hogwarts School, played on screen by British actor Alan Rickman was named the greatest "Harry Potter" character of all time in a MTV News Harry Potter World Cup poll of fans.

The poll which was conducted by MTV, also cited the death of Hogwarts headmaster Professor Dumbledore as the most unforgettable moment in the series, winning 51 percent of the almost 36,000 votes cast.

Dumbledore's demise easily outstripped the smooch between Harry Potter and girlfriend Cho Chang in "The Order of the Phoenix".

Hermione Granger's time turner was voted the magical device most fans wish really existed, with Harry's invisibility cloak coming in a close second.

Neville Longbottom topped the poll for the character that fans thought should get a spin-off movie or book, closely followed by Luna Lovegood.

After seven books and with the eighth and final movie, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2" closes an era for millions of moviegoers as it opens in theaters worldwide this week.

Sam Pinto, FHM Sexiest Woman 2011 Talks About Being Sexy

Kapuso sexy star Sam Pinto is Sexiest Woman in the World 2011 as officially announced by men's magazine FHM last night at The World Trade Center.

From a far 32nd in 2010, Sam made a huge jump straight to the top spot this year courtesy of text, print and online votes. Pinto consistently dominated the list’s unofficial tally in its final weeks.

For Sam, sexy goes beyond merely having a curvy figure.

A lot of people think being sexy is physical: having big boobs, big butt, curvy. But for me, it's not just that. You can be sexy by being confident, being yourself, being happy for who you are,” Sam said.

Pinto is grateful to all who supported her in grabbing the FHM plum.

Sa lahat talaga ng tao na nag-support, grabe. Grabe. Sobrang... para sa kanila 'to,” she said.

Relating to the manner by which she keeps herself fit, Sam mentioned swimming, boxing and pole dancing among other activities that she has taken up.

Well that pole dancing seems very sexy, no, but it's not bastos. It's also a form of exercise since it's more on you losing your body weight,” she shared.

Sam added that among her body parts, she considers her eyes the sexiest because “very seductive at classy raw kasi ito at kayang-kaya niyang mang-akit ng tao sa katitingin kung nanaisin.

'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2' Grosses $43M Opening Receipts Worldwide

Los Angeles (AP) — Harry Potter has conjured up a tidy sum from the first overseas debuts of his final film on its way to a potentially record-shattering opening weekend.

Distributor Warner Bros. says "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" took in $43.6 million in 26 countries outside the United States on its first day Wednesday.

Studio executives said Thursday the franchise finale had the biggest opening day ever in several countries, including Australia with $7.5 million, Italy with $4.6 million and Sweden with $2.1 million. In France, the studio said "Deathly Hallows: Part 2" had the biggest Wednesday opening ever at $7.1 million.

In the countries where the film opened Wednesday, total revenues were 82 percent higher than they were on the first day for "Deathly Hallows: Part 1" last November, according to Warner Bros.

The finale got a boost from the franchise's first 3-D installment. Admissions for 3-D screenings, which cost a few dollars more than 2-D showings, accounted for 65 percent of revenues, the studio said.

"Deathly Hallows" continues opening worldwide Thursday and Friday.

In the United States, the film is expected to put up franchise-record numbers as it debuts just after midnight Friday. "Deathly Hallows: Part 1" had the franchise's biggest opening weekend domestically with $125 million.

"The franchise record, you can consider that history. That we're going to do. It's not a question," said Dan Fellman, head of distribution at Warner Bros., which also holds Hollywood's all-time record for domestic debuts with a $158.4 million weekend on 2008's "The Dark Knight."

"The only question is 'Dark Knight,' whether we can put that together. My feeling at this time is that it's very, very do-able."

The 3-D price advantage for the "Harry Potter" finale will help, given that "The Dark Knight" and other top domestic debuts, including "Spider-Man 3" at $151.1 million and "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" at $142.8 million, played only in 2-D.

If fan frenzy is strong enough, "Deathly Hallows: Part 2" could become the first of the eight "Harry Potter" films to top $1 billion at the box office worldwide.

The record-holder remains the franchise's first film, 2001's "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," with $974.8 million globally.

By splitting the film adaptation of J.K. Rowling's seventh "Harry Potter" adventure into two parts, Warner Bros. essentially is doubling its box-office revenue. The first installment of "Deathly Hallows" pulled in $955.4 million worldwide.

"Deathly Hallows: Part 2" picks up where the first film left off, as young wizards Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) return to Hogwarts school for a final showdown against dark Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes).

The finale generally has earned glowing reviews from critics.
