UAAP 2011 Male Hotties

The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP ) is a rich source of showbiz material. In case you’ve forgotten or didn’t know, the UAAP was the launching pad to showbiz of, to name some of them, Bobby Jaworski, Freddie Webb, Francis Arnaiz, Joey Marquez, Atoy Co, Benjie Paras, Yoyong Martirez, Jimmy Santos, Jonas Mariano, Jason Webb, James Yap, BJ Manalo, Alvin Patrimonio, Jerry Codinera, Jojo Lastimosa, JV Gayoso, Bong Alvarez, Iago Raterta, Bruce Cabral, Zanjoe Marudo, Chris Tiu and Xian Lim.

Some of them have quit showbiz after a very brief stay while others are still active,” said Felix Manuel, one of Funfare’s “beauty experts.”

The 2011 UAAP, hosted by Ateneo de Manila University (with six Men’s Seniors titles), opened last Saturday, July 9, at the Marikina Sports Park in Marikina City with the theme All Out, All Heart (the games started last Sunday at the Big Dome). Highlight was the lighting of the torch which has already been making the rounds of the eight UAAP members, also including University of Santo Tomas (18 Men’s Seniors titles and 38 general championships), Far Eastern University (19 Men’s Seniors titles, 16 general championships), University of the Philippines (two Men’s Seniors titles, five general championships), National University (one Men’s Seniors title and three general championships), University of the East (18 Men’s Seniors titles and three general championships), Adamson University (one Men’s Seniors title) and De La Salle University (seven Men’s Seniors titles).

As in past UAAP seasons, Felix has made a roster of “UAAP Hotties,” four from each school. Here they are:

Ciao Firenze!

Having spent the last few weeks in Italy on a last minute decision to abandon all my US responsibilities, there was much experienced, learned, tolerated, and enjoyed.  It was not the romantic last minute vacation that everyone seems to expect of us young, single, thirty-somethings...although we ate great food, we walked what seemed like10 miles a day, we ate more great food, and we walked some more.  While I am happy to feel the clean fluffy carpet once again beneath my toes in my quiet apartment here in downtown Cleveland, I miss some of the grittiness and the humanity that Italy imparts.
There is no way to ignore the expressions of human life which reverberate throughout Italy, those which are so cleansed, starched and even looked down upon here in America.  While there is the corner baker, and butcher that in Italy you grow to know quiet well (even in the biggest cities)... here in America, we shop at Costco, and Safeway- and we stick to ourselves.  In Italy there is the evening passeggiata, when the streets fill with people, shopping, walking, and enjoying the evening after their day of work.  Here in America, after work people are rushing home to have those last few hours of the day to themselves, before they have to start all over again so early the next day.  On a 95 degree day in Rome, Italy, business men show small sweat marks through in their designer dress shirts as they glide along the sidewalks at high noon to the nearest bar for a bite to eat.  After all, energy is expensive and it is just a little sweat...while in America, we blast our air conditioners so that we need to wear sweaters to the office...being hot is gross.  This same Italian embrace of human life is of course reflected in Italian food and cooking. It is simple, but yet overwhelmingly fresh and flavorful.
At the amazing Artevita B&B on the Oltrarno side of Florence, Italy, with the help of our BnB owner, Leonardo, we were able to sample many of the neighborhood's very authentic (non-touristy) trattorias, rotisseries, and of course pizzerias.  Two of our all time favorite dishes across the trip were the pollo arrosto con patate (roasted chicken with potatoes),

(which we had a few times)

and the fiore di zucca fritte (fried squash blossoms). These were also stuffed with warm ricotta cheese and anchovies, so that you get that rich salty filling with every crispy bite.

While over our many 95 degree days, I became very attached to the Caprese salad with my absolute favorite, Buffalo-milk mozzarella, and fresh super flavorful tomatoes,

I am actually most missing the perfectly foamy morning espresso

and biscotti.

Brian actually attempted filling his morning cornetto with prosciutto and Nutella...He may actually have an idea there.

After a long day climbing to the top of the Piazzale Michelangelo, and vising the Boboli Gardens ( still 95 degrees and no shade).  It was time for a little taste of Napoli in Florence.  We stopped at the recommended Gusta Pizza, just outside the Pitti Palace.  I once again had to order the buffala mozzarella with arugula, while we also shared the margherita.  It was even better than it looks.

While Florence was only just one stop on our Italian adventure, it always seems to leave an impression on me, as much as I never think that it will.  I am not sure if it is the quaint streets, or the Florentine fashion or just the amazing food (stay tuned for a post on Il Latini) and friendly people..or perhaps a little of it all.  For many more recommendations in Florence, feel free to comment.

Buona notte Firenze, A Presto.

Two-headed Snake a Blockbuster at Skazka Zoo, Ukraine

A two-headed Albino California Kingsnake, each react and eat separately has become a popular attraction at Skazka (or Fairy Tale) Zoo in Ukraine.

"Sometimes one head wants to crawl in one direction and the other head in another direction," zoo director Oleg Zubkov said.

Zoo officials say the snake sometimes even steal food from each other. Because of that, zoo workers have to put a barrier between the heads when feeding the snake.

"If it is really hungry, its heads may steal food from each other," Zubkov said, adding he also needs to separate the heads with a barrier.

"The second head may get angry, but both then feel satiation because they only have one stomach."

The zoo said the three-year-old, two-foot-long (60 centimeter) reptile are extremely rare, appearing once in every 50 years.

Visitor numbers had nearly doubled since it went on display in early July, said zoo keeper Yakovenko.

The snake will be on display at the zoo until Mid-September.

To strengthen its position in the local mobile communications industry as the leading value-for-money and feature-packed brand of phone, Cherry Mobile introduces its newest brand ambassador: action movie star and TV personality Robin Padilla.

Saggy Pants Arrest at California Airport Creates Dissent, Charges Dropped!

Saggy pants wearers may now live in peace knowing the sagginess of their pants is not a crime in the United States of America.

They can now be saggy in the airport, or a plane, mall, or perhaps any other location.

Charges against Deshon Marman, a college football player from San Francisco, have been dropped. Marman was initially accused of resisting arrest after a June 15th incident aboard a US Airways flight- an incident that stemmed from the bagginess of Marman’s pants.

The 20-year-old was arrested and charged with trespassing, resisting arrest and suspicion of battery on a police officer at San Francisco International Airport following a flight attendant’s request the young man- who has a full scholarship, football and academic, at the University of New Mexico- pull up the pajama pants he was wearing. Marman told crew members he would adjust the saggy pants as soon as he got to his seat, as his hands were full.

San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said Wednesday that prosecutors “do not believe that criminal charges are warranted in light of all of the circumstances surrounding the incident.” The decision followed a protest at City Hall Wednesday in which 200 people gathered to demand charges against Marman be dropped.

Protesters complained Marman was targeted because he is young and black. One dramatically stated:
You say you want the pants pulled up,” the Rev. Amos Brown said from the podium. “We say, pull up justice in America.”
A spokesman for US Airways said the airline is “in open communication” with Brown and the NAACP over the incident, but did not provide further details. The company also said it was trying to help Marman keep his scholarship.

Simon Cowell a Gentle-Turned-Nasty Judge in 'X Factor' Promo

After teasing a kindler, gentler version of himself, Simon Cowell lets his inner nastiness shine in a new extended promo for Fox's highly anticipated singing competition, "The X Factor," which premiered on July 12.

The clip opens with Cowell and the rest of the judges - Paula Abdul, Nicole Scherzinger and Antonio "L.A." Reid - judging a young girl singing the "Annie" classic "The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow" a little too leniently, with a pink sweater-clad Cowell exclaiming, "I love your spirit!" A voiceover from Cowell continues the loveliest, proclaiming, "I want to make people's dreams come true. I even think about the environment!"

And then Cowell wakes up in bed, rubs his face and says, "Wow, what a horrible nightmare!" Soon, the viewer is watching clips of Cowell calling contestants "absolute rubbish" and "deluded".

"The X Factor" premieres September 21 on Fox.

Charlize Theron, Ryan Reynolds' Newest Lady Love?

After his splitsville with (ex) wife Scarlett Johansson, showbiz watchers have wondered which starlet would snag newly single Ryan Reynolds. Now, the mystery is finally solved!

A source tells the new issue of Us Weekly that the "Green Lantern" star, 34, and Charlize Theron, 35, "have been dating — for months! They're exclusive, and it's very hush-hush."

While the two haven't been photographed together, a witness noticed Reynolds' motorcycle at Theron's home all morning on June 5, then saw the actor exit her house around 3 p.m. - and she left just minutes later.

Has Reynolds found a perfect match?

"They're both career-focused," explains the source, "but not in a crazy way."

For instance, don't expect to see the stars side-by-side on a red carpet. "She won't go to an event with him," the insider says of Theron, who split with love of nine years Stuart Townsend in 2010. "That's not her style."

Meanwhile, Reynolds hasn't completely shut off contact with famous ex Johansson, 26. He and the "Iron Man 2" actress were spotted having a cordial dinner last Friday at Little Dom's in L.A.
